Island Women heading to Kenya for SOLID

On Feb 25th this year four adventurous women are heading to Kenya to distribute the proceeds of SOLID’s Christmas fundraising campaign, as well as other project goals. Lynda Turner (SOLID Director) will be joined by Shirley McIntyre (on her second volunteer trip to Kenya), Nancy Wiggen and Jackie Stibbards of Merritt, and they will be spending a month in rural Kakamega distributing the generous donations of Salt Spring Islanders. In total 21 goats, 48 solar lights and 44 chicken flocks were purchased and these will be distributed to families in the Kakamega region. Salt Spring Islanders are familiar with the Goat Project from last year, and this year SOLID is offering other alternative gifting options. Read more

Report from Kenya
SOLID volunteer Shirley McIntyre and board member Lynda Turner spent most of May this year in Kakamega, Kenya, collaborating with SOLID partners and other projects supported by the residents of Salt Spring.Salt Spring continues to support goats for HIV+ mothers and in the last three years 300 goats were delivered, which has now multiplied to approximately 700 goats. This May Shirley and Lynda presented 25 goats to two groups of HIV+ mothers, who were overjoyed with this gift. The women had previously attended a workshop on the care and feeding of the goats and the goats had been examined by a vet. Read more

SOLID has a challenge for the residents of Salt Spring Island which builds on the hugely successful goat sales from Christmas 2012.
In May 2013 more dedicated volunteers from Salt Spring will be travelling to Kenya to volunteer their time and energy, and a big part of this mission will be the fulfillment of the “Feed a Family, Feed a Village Project” which will provide long lived fruit trees, tools and education on fruit propagation, ensuring that families receive critical nutrition during the annual famine season from March to June.
