On September 19th Meron Moroz and Sam Barlow of SaltSpring Island will walk 56 km in the Great Lake Walk around Cowichan Lake. We will be fundraising for two organizations, SOLID and Partners for Others.

SOLID supports several projects in Sub-Saharan Africa including a school for orphans, gardens, paliative care centre, cultural centre, disabled centre and a girls rescue centre.

Partners for Others has shipped over 2 million pounds of donated goods to the South Pacific, Asia the Carribean and Southern Africa. They have provided jobs, tools and equipment that have allowed men and women in Swaziland to earn a living, support their own families and, in turn, to pay school fees for over 160 children in their community.

To donate to this fundraising project please contact the SOLID office, 125 McPhillips Avenue, SaltSpring Island, BC, V8K 2T6, solid.saltspring@gmail.com or through this website. We can issue Canadian and US tax receipts, please visit the “What You Can Do” tab for instructions.

Memeza Africa, the masterful fusion of African and Canadian music, dance and spirit are returning to Canada after a hugely successful tour to sold out audiences throughout Western Canada in 2008. Memeza Africa will be performing at

The ArtSpring Theatre on Salt Spring Island Sunday May 17, 2009 at 2:30p.m.

This profoundly powerful and spirited group features South African artist Jimmy Mulovhedzi together with Canadian singer/songwriter Holly Wright supported by an ensemble of 18 dynamic singers, drummers and dancers from Soweto, South Africa. This unique fusion of African and Western music combined with the energy of the traditional African rhythms and dance, had audiences dancing in the aisles, weeping with emotion and on their feet in thunderous applause in praise of this show on their 2008 tour.

Members of this group have performed for or shared the stage with: Nelson Mandela; Oprah Winfrey; Quincy Jones; Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the Soweto Gospel Choir and kd lang. They were selected as the entertainers for the FIFA Confederations Cup Draw in Johannesburg South Africa in November of 2008 and are now bringing their incredible talent to Canada. March 2009 Update

Sala Hantle Walk & Fun Run

January 21, 2009 by

The Sala Hantle Africa Walk & Fun Run is a University of British Columbia Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences fundraiser for sub-Saharan African communities devastated by HIV/AIDS. This year the event is being expanded in partnership with VIDEA to include a fundraising run at Elk and Beaver Lakes in Victoria, as well as the primary event at UBC on March 15th, 2009.

Sala Hantle Walk & Fun Run 2008

Sala Hantle (Stay Well) Africa is a project of the Saltspring Organization for Life Improvement and Development (SOLID). In early 2007, SOLID members Beth Gessinger, a nurse, and Anna Callegari, a pharmacist, traveled to Africa and identified several local projects critical to communities so heavily impacted by poverty and AIDS. With financial and human resources in such severe shortage, these projects continue to struggle to maintain even the most basic operations. This is where Sala Hantle Africa lends their support by providing direct financial aid to HIV/AIDS support and care institutions and organizations, and through securing in-kind support such as medical supplies, pharmaceutical drugs and other necessary supplies and equipment.

Sala Hantle Africa’s projects include:
– Supporting a comfort fund and training of Home Based Care workers in the Ndi Moyo Palliative Care Centre in Malawi
– Support for a clinic and basic medical care of the Kambhoke Orphan and Vulnerable Children School in Swaziland
– Supporting a community clinic at the Phelisanong Disabled HIV-AIDS Orphans and Vulnerable Children Community Project in Lesotho

Who Are We Helping?
Founded in March 2003, the Stephen Lewis Foundation helps to ease the pain of HIV/AIDS in Africa at the grassroots level. It provides care to women who are ill and struggling to survive; assists orphans and other AIDS affected children; supports heroic grandmothers who almost single-handedly care for their orphan grandchildren; and supports associations of people living with HIV/AIDS. As of June 2008, the SLF had distributed and committed more than $22 million to grassroots initiatives across 15 sub-Saharan African countries, with millions more under consideration. For more information on the types of projects the SLF fund, the Grandmothers Campaign, and to access the latest news and resources, please visit the Stephen Lewis Foundation website www.stephenlewisfoundation.org
